How to run a marathon in two minutes
The date was October 29, 1969, when UCLA student Charley Kline sent out what’s considered the first message over the internet. With minimal fanfare, via a computer taking up much of his room, Kline typed two letters before his system crashed. An instant later and a few hundred miles away, the letters “lo” appeared on the computer screens at the Stanford Research Institute. Sure, it was perhaps a failed attempt (he had meant to send the word “login”), yet those two letters changed the world forever.
In this entry, we want to highlight a simple idea:
Big movements often start small.
This is the thesis of James Clear’s Atomic Habits, in which he outlines specific methods we can all employ to help create better habits, and ultimately achieve our larger goals.
One such method Clear introduces is the Two-Minute Rule:
- Say you want to start a running habit. Rather than challenge yourself out of the gate such as by committing to run a marathon in 2 and a half hours, just start your run with no set length.
- After two minutes, however far you go, stop running. You probably didn’t even break a sweat – but forcing yourself to stop will be even better in the long run. It will leave you wanting more.
- The next run, bump it up another 2 minutes and so on. The first few times may not challenge you – but that’s the point. Clear’s research provides the secret: start small but dream big and you put yourself on the track to long-term success.
Which brings us to the project we’re starting today: Anevis.
With Anevis we aspire to launch a movement, but we are starting small with three very special skirts.
We are not only offering a product that’s comfortable and beautiful. Rather, we are introducing an approach to healthy living and the right to choose that embodies important and worthy human values. We’re here to help you achieve your goals, but most importantly, we are here to help you grow as a person. That’s what we strive for at Anevis.
We’re well aware it’s not easy to change our associations with athleisure. As James Clear illustrates, big changes start with small steps. So for now, we will focus on tying our "sh".
Even a world changing idea like the internet took years before it’s true potential could be seen.
It has to start somewhere. And so we say “Hello.” We’re so excited to start this journey with you.
